Pavement ants, characterized by their dark brown to black coloring, are a common sight in urban environments. With six legs and a segmented, oval shape, they measure about 1/8 inch in size. Found throughout the entire US, these ants exhibit an adaptable nature, making them equally at home in cracks in pavements as well as infiltrating structures. Their diet is diverse, ranging from insects to seeds, nuts, and even sweet substances. While they don't carry diseases, pavement ants can contaminate food.
Pavement ants have a hearty appetite, feasting on a diverse menu that includes insects, bread, seeds, nuts, aphid honeydew, sweet substances, as well as meat and cheese.
These diligent ants establish their nests beneath stones and within cracks in pavements. They're not hesitant to move in and infest structures if given the opportunity.
While black pavement ants don't carry diseases, they do have the capacity to contaminate food.
1. Eliminate standing water, as moisture tends to attract pests like ants, mosquitoes, and termites.
2. Trim back tree branches and other plants near your home to thwart any potential entry points.
3. Seal up any cracks or small openings around your foundation.
4. Avoid storing firewood and building materials right next to your home.
